AUSTRALIA'S BIGGEST MORNING TEA - COWARAMUP STYLE

I had great pleasure in being part of an Australia's Biggest Morning Tea event on Thursday 27th May held at Adinfern Estate, and hosted by Deborah Earl (my darling mother) and Deb Newland.

Mum and Deb first organised their own last year, and after raising $7,500 they set their sights on raising $10,000. Almost as soon as last years event was over, mum started planning for this years, and over the course of the last 12 months had been quietly approaching local businesses, suppliers and members of the community. The response and generosity of everyone was astounding.

The spare bedroom in the house was full to the brim with cartons of wine, coffee cups, hampers, vases, books, local produce and a cacophony of prizes and auction items.

With the event sold out several days prior, donations flooding through and a lot of the wine sold through an on-line auction, even before doors opened the tally was standing at $9000.

As the ladies started arriving at 9.30am and shortly after the function room at Adinfern was full of chatter and laughter, cups full with tea and coffee and delectable morsels being enjoyed.

With raffles, a game of heads and tails, an auction of 40 items and the sheer generosity of all involved, plus ticket sales the wine auction and donations, the tally now sits around $17,000 which will go to the Cancer Council.

Above are a few photos that I took as we were setting up as you can see the room transformed. I'll post some more pics up of the day when I get them and tell you a bit more about various aspects of the day. Watch out for the local paper too.

GUESS WHO?

I heard some exciting news the other day, and being the lover of food that I am, I am super excited and can't wait to find out if it is true. I hope it's not just a rumor, and something is definitely happening next door at Udderly Divine Cafe so surely it's all true.

So.. the secret is........

We are getting a bakery! And it's not just any bakery a french bakery. Which I can't attest to at all, but wouldn't that just be absolutely wonderful?

Croissants, baguettes, pan au chocolat and.... (my french is failing me), baked fresh every day for your/my eating pleasure.

I don't know an opening date at the moment, but there certainly is some action happening across the road. As soon as I found more out, I will let you know!

GOODBYE OLD FRIEND

Tomorrow the old church next door to Cowaramup Agencies is going on a little journey and we say goodbye as she steps into her new life. Having sat unused now for several years, Rob and Julie Saunders from Taunton Farm Holiday Park are giving her a new home, a bit of a touch up and a new lease on life. People will able to use her for weddings and functions and she'll be right at home amongst the gum trees just up the road and still in the district.

Rob also has a family connection with the church, as it was his grandfather, apparently who, at the end of a Sunday service, would set a a quasi-dentistry and help with the parishioner's dental problems - pulling out teeth and the like. Ouch!

In the last week, the preparations have been carried out. The beautiful, old pews have gone into storage, the inside of the building has been braced, the roof has been taken off, and now she sits on the back of a truck waiting to be taken down the road tomorrow. With a police escort no less.

So, as sad as it will be to see her go, I think that this is a much better alternative to her sitting there, unused, unloved and neglected and slowly wasting away like the iconic "Old House" or the Old School near Wirring Road. She's going off to greener pastures and a better life.

Goodbye and bon voyage! x

Citizen of the Year
We wandered down to Pioneer Park on Australia Day for the annual Lions Club breakfast and enjoyed a lovely morning. Tip for next year though -- make sure you get down before 7.29am. We managed to breeze right through but by 7.30am there was a massive line.

After breakfast, and just before the ceremony the winner other inaugural Colin Duggan Citizen of the Year award was announced.

For those of you who missed out on the privilege of meeting Colin Duggan before he sadly and unexpectedly passed away last year. Colin's commitment and service to the community was inspiring, raises the challenge for everyone to contribute something back to their community.

Ten people were nominated for the award but the congratulations went to Peter Clews. Nominated by three different clubs and one individual for the work he does around the town and for the many groups he is associated with.

Thanks to Peter and to everyone else around the community who contributes their time and energy into things ticking along - much appreciated!

Above is the article that the Times wrote. If you want to read it in full just click on the picture and it will take you to a bigger version
